Prosurgics’ robotic
surgery products are assisting surgeons in an increasing number
of specialities, and an expanding number of hospitals. Using
our products, they are able to provide better outcomes for
their patients in terms of shorter recovery times, reduced
pain, smaller scars and fewer complications. Here are some
of the areas where you are most likely to encounter Prosurgics
working with your surgeon:
Cardiothoracic surgery
Prosurgics’ EndoAssist
enables surgeons to perform an increasing number of heart
and chest operations using keyhole techniques. Conventionally,
operations on the heart such as a coronary artery bypass (CABG), or repair
of the heart valves, require a very large chest incision and in many instances
the surgeon has to break the breast bone (sternum) or ribs in order to gain
access. Minimal access surgery enabled by EndoAssist involves only small incisions,
and avoids the necessity to break any bones. The patient benefits include very
much shorter length of stay in hospital and convalescence, significant reductions
in post-operative pain, and much reduced scarring.
Prostate Disease (Urology)
Prostate cancer is now the most
common form of cancer affecting men in the USA and many other
countries. EndoAssist is being used to assist in performing
a procedure called “laparoscopic radical prostatectomy”. This
uses a minimally invasive (keyhole) approach to remove a patient’s
cancerous prostate gland. There are important benefits of a keyhole approach
over conventional surgery. Replacing the traditional 10-25cm incision by
5 small punctures provides important cosmetic benefits to the patient, and
much faster recovery time. Perhaps of even more importance, a number of studies
around the world have pointed to reduced levels of urinary incontinence and
erectile dysfunction (impotence) side effects.
Gall Bladder Surgery and Hernia Repairs (General Surgery)
An increasing proportion of these
techniques are now being performed through small incisions
with the endoscope being held and moved by Prosurgics’
EndoAssist. Keyhole surgery means that you will have a much shorter stay
in hospital (perhaps not even an overnight stay for gall bladder surgery),
and much less pain and scarring.
Obesity Surgery
It is well recognised that people who are extremely overweight (morbid obesity)
suffer a much greater risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, heart disease,
and high blood pressure. Surgical treatment of obesity can offer significant
benefit where other approaches have been unsuccessful. There are two recognised
operations: gastric banding, and gastric bypass; in both instances the surgery
reduces the size of the stomach so reducing the amount of food that can be
eaten before feeling full. EndoAssist is used in minimally invasive (keyhole)
approaches to these operations. Keyhole surgery shortens the recovery and in-patient
time, reduces the size of the abdominal scar, and has less associated pain.
