Prosurgics has been instrumental
in setting the standard for medical robot safety, and our
development process includes documentation and testing to
ensure that risks in design and use are minimised, while
safety-monitoring processes detect any potential hazards
and take preventive action.
Collaborative Development Projects
Prosurgics participates in national and international collaborative
R&D projects with key universities and research groups
around the world. These studies are normally competitively
funded by grant-awarding bodies such as the European Commission
and national governments. Prosurgics selects projects which
refresh and extend its skill base, and put it in touch
with leading researchers in related sectors such as sensor
technology, image processing, telematics and IT infrastructure.
Where new product development requires specialist clinical
or technology skills, Prosurgics works with leading universities
to undertake a joint development. Usually the university
receives the rights to continue using the development in
future research and publish the results (where these are
not commercially sensitive), while Prosurgics retains the
exclusive rights to use the development in its products.
A particular area where Prosurgics works closely with
university hospitals is in clinical evaluation of new products
and applications. We establish reference centres in leading
hospitals where we work with surgeons to develop techniques
for robotic surgery, and carry out evidence-based evaluations
of the benefits of using robots in new procedures. These
lead to publications in medical conferences and journals
that establish the scientific basis for the claims we make
about the clinical and economic benefits of our surgical
robots.
